For this month’s ChicagoVerseUniteD cover story, every day in January will preview a different local artist’s plans for 2011. Today: Only Children!
Disco and house DJ/production collective Only Children have been making a name for themselves in Chicago for a while now, between a steady supply of remixes and mixtapes at the group’s Soundcloud page, and regular sets across a slew of Chicago nightlife events. And in 2011, the act is looking towards the next step, as Only Children’s Chris Baronner (aka Bald E.) tells CVU about new original material on the horizon.
“Only Children is releasing a debut single, “Don’t Stop,” in early April with remixes from a couple of critically acclaimed UK producers (Mighty Mouse and Crazy P) and two outstanding local producers in Bit Funk and the band Hey Champ. The release will be vinyl and digital,” Baronner reveals of the upcoming effort. “We’re all big New Order fans and old 70s/early 80s italo-disco junkies so it probably wouldn’t surprise us if listeners spotted those types as ‘RIYLs.’ We’ll probably put out another single later on this year if things go as planned as well as produce a few remixes when it makes sense.”
More immediate from the group is the inaugural edition of the Free To Be (Dance Party & Social) happening January 29th at Pancho’s. Speaking of the night, Baronner describes it as “(bringing) together artists of all mediums and backgrounds in a safe and hassle-free environment.” Find more from Only Children at its newly launched site, or check out remixes of The Prairie Cartel and Hey Champ below.
