OK Go Take “Needing/Getting” Video To The Desert For Mind-Blowing Audio Recreation Treatment

Posted in OK Go by Jaime Black on February 6th, 2012

OK Go

As has come to be expected from the group, OK Go has posted another stupefyingly brilliant music video. The clip, which premiered shortly before the Super Bowl yesterday, is for “Needing/Getting,” off the act’s 2011 effort, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky. A posting at the group’s YouTube, pasted in full below, explains the treatment in detail.

The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they’d play the right note no matter where they were struck. For more information and behind-the-scenes footage, see http://www.LetsDoThis.com and http://www.okgo.net. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars.

Find the stunning ”Needing/Getting” video below, followed by an audio player with a studio, demo, and live version of the track, and following OK Go’s CVU podcast interview from this past summer’s Lollapalooza.

Pyyramids

Chicago scene veterans may remember He Say, She Say, the hipster-ready hip-pop project of DJ/producer Million Dollar Mano and vocalist Drea Smith. While that outfit shut down in 2010, Smith has been keeping herself active with a new venture by the name of PYYRAMIDS. The group is a collaboration between the singer/songwriter and OK Go‘s Tim Nordwind, making for a powerhouse of talent with strong ties to the Chicago music scene. PYYRAMIDS will drop its debut EP, Human Beings, later this month on October 31st, with a live appearance at Big Hassle’s CMJ Party happening Wednesday, October 19th at Pianos in New York. Pre-order Human Beings now, and discover “That Ain’t Right,” the glam and gold-tinged first single from Smith and Nordwind’s PYYRAMIDS, below.

Lollapalooza 2011 Line Up Boasts A Variety Of Local Talent Including Smith Westerns, Midnight Conspiracy, & Kids These Days

Following the midnight announcement of Lollapalooza‘s 2011 talent, CVU would like to congratulate this year’s local and locally-related artists, including OK Go, Smith Westerns, Maps & Atlases, Patrick Stump, Gold Motel, Disappears, Kids These Days, Black Cards, and Midnight Conspiracy. It’s a strong showing across the board of acts both established and emerging, with OK Go serving as Chicago scene veterans, while Smith Westerns fill the roll of high profile indie darlings. Disappears arrive on the line up early in its career, while friends of this site Midnight Conspiracy land on the festival following international appearances and hometown residencies. And of course, it’s easy to notice two separate post-Fall Out Boy projects among this year’s listings. Perhaps most promising, however, is the inclusion of live hip hop and soul pop collective Kids These Days (pictured above), a CVU favorite at this year’s SXSW. Find a clip for the group’s track “Darling” below, and watch for more about Lollapalooza 2011 all summer long, right here at CVU.
